**Lesson Plan: Energy and Society**
**Subject:** Basic Science and Technology
**Class:** Junior Secondary 1
**Topic:** Energy and Society
**Duration:** 60 minutes
**Objective:**
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Define energy and its forms.
2. Understand the sources of energy.
3. Explain the importance of energy in society.
4. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various energy sources.
**Materials Needed:**
- Whiteboard and markers
- Projector and screen (or a computer with internet access)
- Energy sources chart
- Worksheets
- Videos or images depicting different energy sources (solar panels, wind turbines, etc.)
**Lesson Outline:**
1. **Introduction (10 minutes)**
- Greet the students and start with a brief discussion to gauge their current understanding of energy.
- Introduce the topic by defining energy. Explain that energy is the ability to do work and comes in various forms such as motion, heat, light, and electricity.
- Show a video or a few images related to different forms of energy to capture their interest.
2. **Presentation (20 minutes)**
- Explain the different sources of energy: renewable (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass) and non-renewable (coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear).
- Use the projector to display an energy sources chart. Discuss each source briefly, highlighting the context in which they are used.
- Highlight the importance of energy in society by giving examples like lighting homes, powering machines, transportation, communication, etc.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various energy sources.
3. **Activity (15 minutes)**
- Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a worksheet that includes pictures and names of different energy sources.
- Ask each group to classify the energy sources into renewable and non-renewable and list one advantage and one disadvantage for each.
- Allow the groups to present their findings to the class.
4. **Discussion (10 minutes)**
- Facilitate an open discussion on how students use energy in their daily lives.
- Discuss the impact of energy consumption on the environment and the importance of sustainable practices.
- Encourage students to think critically about how they can contribute to energy conservation.
5. **Conclusion (5 minutes)**
- Summarize the lesson by reiterating the key points covered: definition of energy, its importance, various sources, and their pros and cons.
- Assign a simple homework task: ask the students to write a short paragraph about one renewable energy source and its importance for the future.
**Assessment:**
Students will be assessed based on their participation in group activities, their ability to classify energy sources correctly, the quality of their group presentations, and the completion of their homework assignment.
**Notes:**
Ensure to provide support and additional explanations to students who may struggle with the concepts. Encourage questions and curiosity throughout the lesson to keep the students engaged and facilitate a deeper understanding.
